    Description

Sanke-type WWI postcard of famed U-boat ace Otto Weddigen, done by Gustav Liersch, a competitor of Sanke.  Photo was apparently taken when Weddigen finished his first wildly successful tour with the U-9, in September, 1914, when he sank three British cruisers in less than an hour!
Weddigen was then given command of the U-29, he was awarded the Pour le Merite, the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of Max Joseph of Bavaria, the Knight's Cross of Saxony, and the Knight's Cross of Wurttemberg, none of which he is wearing in this photo, which tells me it had to be a photo taken after his first super successful cruise with the U-9 in 1914.
With the U-29, Weddigen sank the HMS Hawke and a number of merchant ships, before the U-29 was rammed by the famed HMS Dreadnaught on March 18, 1915, split in two, and she sank with the loss of all hands, including Captain Weddigen.
This is an interesting card because someone inscribed the dates of his commands on the back with the U-9 and the U-29, but, they got the date of his death incorrect with the U-29 - one must remember, news traveled slowly in 1915, so, it's likely the folks at home didn't know this U-boat hero had been killed until some time after his loss, along with his entire crew.
An interesting and nice card with one bump to the lower right corner, as shown.  Will make a great addition to any WWI German photo or card collection.  Standard postcard size, of course.
