ITEM DESCRIPTION
Item Description
Up for your consideration is a hand-painted oil/gold foil painting of the Reading (Berkshire, England) coat of arms.  The piece is translated as the "Community of Reading", with the coat of arms being used in the form of 4 young maidens with Queen Elizabeth in the center during the Queen's life (1533 - 1603).  The piece was created in 1566, after a visit from the Queen.  This is an original piece, painted on wood, from that era.  The piece is very unusual in that it features 5 women.  A very early "feminist" piece.
The frame measures 16" x 13.5", and the wood panel is 14" x 11.5".  There is some wear to the surface, and some minor touch-up to the background.  The pictures will show the minor wear to the main portion of the piece, so examine them closely.  The gold leaf is original.  The frame is likely 19th C., and show wear. Currently, the piece rests behind a glass panel.
Provenance:
These pieces come from the estate of Cyrus McCormick, a very prominent American.  They were retrieved from long time storage, directly through the family.
