Gag bits operate on a "pulley principle".  The cheek pieces of the headstall pass through the holes in the rings and are connected directly to the reins.  When the reins are pulled, the mouthpiece of the bit is pulled into the corners of the horse's mouth while pressure is applied to the poll.  Gag bits encourage the horse to both elevate and flex his front end.  They are also often used on strong horses that like to lower their heads to escape the action of the bit.  The dog bone acts upon the tongue while helping to prevent the V-shaped pinching action of a standard single jointed snaffle.  While the rollers help to appease busy mouthed horses, the copper encourages salivation, making the horse's mouth softer and more responsive.   This style of bit is
