This lot offers 600+ numbers of almost a complete set of satirical propaganda politicalmagazine “Dadzis” published in Latvian from 1957 to 1990th (without interruption).
According to the well-known
Danish graphic artist Gerluf Bidstrup, “Dadzis” was at the time THE BEST illustrated
humor magazine in Europe (was published 2 times a month). published
with the money of the Communist Party.
The population of the occupied country boycotted such publications, Russian-
speaking residents did not understand Latvian, so the magazine was very little sold,
published in limited circulation, mainly distributed through libraries.
After independence in 1991, Latvia’s libraries were cleared of Soviet propaganda;
only one incomplete set in the National Library is known.
Magazine “Dadzis” similar to the Moscow “Crocodile” was an instrument of the Cold
War, it was the response of Soviet propaganda to events in the world,in China, Korea,
Japan, USA, Germany, England, Israel, numerous anti-American, anti-Western, anti-
Semitic cartoons made by local Latvian artists, not repeated in other publications.
It reflected various political and geopolitical events like:
